WHO'S IN

Ilari Näckel is a 1972 born goalie coach from Jyväskylä, Finland. I finished my playing career in B-juniors and moved to coaching. Since 1988 I’ve been coaching different age groups in the JYP Hockey Team organisation. In addition, I’ve coached the Voionmaa athletic high school hockey team years 1997- 1999 and 2000-2001. I graduated from the University of Jyväskylä with Masters Degree in Sports Science in the spring of 2000.

Ilari NäckelMy goalie coaching is based on the basic following principles
* All the goalies do not come from the same format. Every goalie has to find his or her own style of play based on his or her physical and other performance qualities of the game requirements.
* It is beneficial for a goalie to play systematically according to his or her style of play. Once you have established your repertoire of moves, you must use them for your benefit by playing every situation in most economical way possible.
* Goalie should force the opponent to make the most difficult decision possible. This way your chances of success increase substantially.
* I prefer the “saving goalie style” over the “covering / blocking goalie style”. It is better to make a save with hands than just waiting for a shot to hit you.
* The butterfly style is close to my heart; therefore, I can help goalies that play down on the ice the most.
* • Each coach-player relationship is based on a two-way interaction where the conversations cultivate as many, if not more, ideas in the coach than what they do in the goalies. This is the only way to improve and develop oneself as a coach.

I’ve had a great pleasure to work with great athletes. I’ve done cooperation with excellent goalies and goalie coaches including Ari Ahonen, Tommi Nikkilä, Mika Lehto, Juha Pitkämäki, Ari-Pekka Siekkinen, Tero Leinonen, and Tommi Tervo. These people and many others have given me many tips and thoughts on how to develop my own philosophy. I thank you for that.
